Canon EOS M200 Review

Canon EOS M200 Review

If you judged the Canon EOS M200 based entirely off of its appearance you might not come away all that impressed – but you’d be making a major mistake.

Upon initial inspection, there isn’t all that much about the Canon EOS M200 that really stands apart from the rest of the pack.

This is a pretty minimalist looking camera, a basic, unassuming kind of camera set up that certainly isn’t going to turn heads anytime soon.

Underneath the hood, however, the Canon EOS M200 is one of the most powerful and capable mirror lists cameras you’ll find on the market at this price point – the kind of camera that can change the way you take pictures from here on out almost overnight.

Sound too good to be true?

Take a look at our quick Canon EOS M200 review for more details.

Overview

The most unique thing about the Canon EOS M200 is the way that it perfectly blends the old “point and shoot” compact camera format with relatively new – and pretty revolutionary – mirror lists camera technology in a way that few other options on the market today can.

Much smaller than any of the full frame options you can find from companies like Canon and Nikon right now, even some of the full frame mirror lists options, you will never have to feel like you are traipsing around with a refrigerator around your neck when you are using this camera.

Super lightweight, super compact, and very adaptable, everything about the Canon EOS M200 feels slick and modern. Truth be told, thanks to the integrated touchscreen that doubles as a viewfinder this mirror lists camera can be operated similarly to a smart phone. That cuts down on the learning curve significantly.

The kit lens that comes with this camera is pretty basic and bare-bones, but it can accept all kinds of other lenses – Canon or otherwise – with no real difficulty whatsoever. The image sensor and capture technology built right in is very impressive, making this one of the most exciting options in the meritless world you’ll have a chance to get your hands on.

Features

Something that really stands out in the Canon EOS M200 reviews you can find online is the sheer volume of advanced options and features you’ll be able to capitalize on when you invest in this technology.

Manual exposure settings, the ability to shoot in RAW, aperture control, and so much more are shoehorned into this compact unit in a way that at first just doesn’t seem to be possible. Combine that with the intelligent Canon Camera Connect technology (and partner mobile app) and you’re looking at a camera that is easy to get the hang of almost straightaway – even if you don’t have a whole lot of experience with these kinds of cameras already.

The DIGIC 8 processor inside of the Canon EOS M200 is the real brains of the operation, and while it’s just slightly slower than what you might find in some of the higher end Canon options it is still blazing fast compared to cameras released even just a couple of years ago.

Autofocus speed and accuracy are off the charts for a mirror less compact camera at this price point, and the touchscreen is a joy to use as well.

A 24 megapixel APS-C image sensor provides highly accurate colors (with an auto white balance that is pretty solid), plenty of sharpness, and the ability to shoot at some high ISO numbers without noise drowning out your images.

As highlighted above, the kit lens that usually comes included with this camera (if you don’t buy the body only option) isn’t all that special. But there are a lot of other lenses out there you can use that take this camera to new levels.

Image Quality

The image quality your get from this camera is spectacular, as every Canon EOS M200 review will tell you.

Not only are you going to be able to shoot still images in stunning high definition but you are also going to be able to capture video at 4K resolutions with no trouble at all. There are some full frame DSLR cameras out there that still have a tough time with 4K video, but you won’t ever feel like the Canon EOS M200 is holding you back in this department.

The lack of headphone or microphone jacks is a bit of an issue for those that want to capture high quality audio when they are recording video. But there are ways to work around that in the internal microphone isn’t all that bad.

Pros

  • Great camera technology at almost too good to be true price point
  • Wide variety of lenses can be used with this camera
  • Shoots in 4K video right out of the box

Cons

  • Pretty bland style and aesthetics
  • Included kit lens isn’t all that special
  • The lack of physical controls, ports, and an independent viewfinder may be an issue for some

Final Verdict

What this all boils down to is simple and straightforward:

If you are in the market for a solid, reliable, and very capable mirror lists camera in a compact form factor – one that isn’t going to blowholes in your bank account along the way – you’ll want to take a closer look at the Canon EOS M200.

Canon has something really special on their hands here. Though there are definitely areas where the Canon EOS M200 could be improved on, for the most part you’ll be very happy with your investment in this camera technology.
