Canon EOS M6 Mark II Review

We live in a golden age of photography. There are no two ways about it. From the evolution of style and technique to the growth of technology, there have never been more quality photos taken on the daily than there are today. Every smartphone is a camera, meaning that every smartphone holder is a photographer.

However, there are some of us that want to take that a bit further. You might have an interest in the art form, maybe you studied a bit of it at college, and you want to take it further, or perhaps you’ve decided to go traveling, and you want a camera that is a step up from your phone to chronicle your journey. That’s the purpose of today’s review.

The Canon EOS M6 Mark II is a recent addition to the Canon EOS series, and spoiler alert, it’s a great camera. It was released alongside the Canon EOS 90D DSLR and offered photographers a budget alternative to the new wave of releases.

It is super lightweight compared to most high-quality cameras you’re going to find, and it’s very small and compact. However, the image quality is virtually unaffected by this small size. It has 14fps shooting capability with uncropped 4k image rendering and 32.50 megapixels.

The Canon EOS M6 Mark II makes for a great travel camera, whether that be one to throw in your bag or pocket on a day to day basis or one to bring with you overseas. Either way, the camera serves its purpose wonderfully.

Specs and Kit

The camera has some fantastic specs despite the small, travel-friendly size of it. It has an APS-C sensor that offers up super-high-resolution images.

The camera has a native ISO range between 100 and 25,600, and an extended ISO that goes up to 51,200, so if you’re planning on going exploring in dark areas like caves, then you don’t have to worry about this camera not being able to pick up the slack. Obviously, you’re going to get more noise pollution, but the quality of low light images that you can take is phenomenal when you look at the size of the device.

It has a shutter speed that goes from 1/16000 to 30 seconds. Again, this is fantastic for a camera of this size. You can capture fast-moving subjects with ease, and the 30 second time is great for mixing up your photo range with some interesting time-lapse pieces.

It has a max aperture of f/3.5 with a kit lens, which is also a 15-45 mm with three times zoom. This admittedly isn’t great, especially when the native lens range for the camera is so low. It would be nice to have seen a better aperture, but with a travel camera, your shutter speed is far more important, so you shouldn’t miss the lack of focus choice too much.

One big drawback, though, is that there is no native viewfinder built into the camera. While this is fine for most compact, travel-friendly cameras, and not something you would expect to have, the Canon EOS M6 Mark II costs upwards of £700 pounds. When you can get a DSLR that is a few years old for, and that takes photos that are just as good if not better for a fraction of the price, then the lack of a viewfinder becomes more noticeable.

However, the APS-C sensor that is built into the M6 is actually the same sensor that is used in the 90D. In that way, it is sort of like the M6 is a miniature version of the DSLR, which makes sense considering that both of them came out at the same time. This quality of hardware makes up for the staggering price for a travel camera but doesn’t help fully nullify the omissions.

Pros and Cons

For those looking for a quick summary of the Canon EOS M6 Mark II, here are some bullet points:

Pros:

  • Lightweight and small body, making it ideal for travel.
  • APS-C sensor is top of the line and offers an impeccable resolution.
  • Great range of shutter speeds and ISO.
  • 14 fps shooting with 4k image rendering capabilities.

Cons:

  • Low aperture range.
  • No viewfinder.
  • Limited native lens range.

Conclusion

To wrap my Canon EOS M6 Mark II review with a nice bow, and answer the big question, yes, the M6 is worth your money.

It retails for around £700 pounds online, and while that’s more than you might be used to paying for a travel camera, the quality of the images more than makes up for it. The range of options that the camera offers you are just too good to pass up, and the sensor that Canon has used results in professional-grade photography with a pocket-sized camera. The shutter speeds and ISO are going to allow you to capture any moment you want, allowing you to immortalize those precious memories that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to.
