DJI Mavic 2 Pro Review
Launched in 2018 alongside the Mavic 2 Zoom, The Mavic 2 has become the Flagship for all drone enthusiasts, whether being used in a Professional Environment or for Personal Hobbyist use.
It retains the Foldable design which was introduced with the original Mavic Pro, meaning that it’s another easily portable device.
Mavic 2 Pro Design & Controller
Without repeating myself, the Mavic 2 Pro retains the Foldable design which proved a big hit in 2016. This is a huge feature for any drone, as it allows you to pack it away until you reach your destination where you plan to be shooting. You may think that because it’s foldable it’s flimsy, but it’s a well built device that maintains it’s structure.
The Hassleblad camera & gimbal are mounted at the Lower front of the drone. This offers little protection if you use the drone & land in tall wet grass, the camera could get wet. This is easily negated with a landing pad, though!
The Drone controller is also foldable, with joysticks which require screwing in place to use. This protects them from damage. On first look, the controller is what you would expect to see from a Radio Controller, but the sticks aren’t used in the same what that a Radio Controlled car would be. It’s certainly required to familiarise yourself with these settings before flying too far away.
The lower part of the controller flips open to provide a holder for your Mobile Phone. When the controller is powered up, this automatically opens the DJI Go 4 App, which makes the process easy for anybody to setup.
This app is heavily recommended by DJI users, as it’s very similar to a standard camera layout, offering ease of use.
Mavic 2 Pro Release Date
The DJI Mavic 2 Pro was released in August 2018. Although it’s closing on 2 years old (written March 2020), the price really hasn’t moved at all.
It was originally retailing for around £1349 and the best price we’ve found is just £20 lower than the original. There’s one huge reason for this;
It’s a High Quality item, with a lack of competition in the market.
Mavic 2 Pro Features
Although it’s a Drone aimed towards professionals, it’s fairly simple to fly. This is due to the features of the drone, such as the Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing that helps you to avoid a crash. The In-built GPS can also counter the Wind elements, holding it in position so that you still get a steady shot. The features are breathtaking, playing a huge part in why the Drone has maintained it’s price since Release date.
Accidents can happen though, so don’t fly this drone expecting it to save you from any eventuality. It will show you visual warnings aswell as producing audio alerts, plus it will brake to avoid an imminent danger. However, it won’t always save you so it’s advised not to look for these opportunities.
When you’re testing out just how fast this thing goes, you’ll find out it has a top speed of 45mph. You might want to test this out when you first get the drone, but it may be safer to build up your tolerance to it (This will save any expensive meetings with the pavement!).

This Video is straight from DJI, showing the specs amd capability of the drone.
Mavic 2 Pro Flying & Shooting Modes
If you’ve just watched the above video, you will have seen just how good the Image Quality is. Admittedly, it’s not going to be as good as a Canon EOS 1D, but it packs an almighty punch with it’s Hasselblad Camera. The camera has a 1-inch CMOS sensor which offers 20 megapixels.
The sensor in the Mavic 2 Pro is around 4x larger than you’ll find in competing drones. It also has an adjustable aperture which provides f/2.8 – f/11. This allows you make the changes required such as controlling depth of field, Exposure Settings & other advanced configurations. If you have a Manual shooting camera, the settings are very similar to that. This will allow the expert photographers to adjust the drone to their prefence, to get the perfect shot.
Video Quality is also impressive. You can video in 4K up to 30 frames per second. You can also choose 2.7k up to 60 frames per second. If HD is all you require, you will be able to use this up to 120 frames per second. This will allow for perfect slow motion in HD.
The Mavic 2 Pro also has various shooting modes, which are integrated to help you achieve quality videos with ease. The modes you will see are; Active Track, Cinematic, Point of Interest, QuickShot, Tapfly, Timelapse & WayPoint. You can also set it up manually, but if you’re still learning how to use the Drone then these modes are very useful indeed.
There are Three main flying modes, which can be altered on the app or on the controller itself.
Positioning Mode is the standard flight mode, providing a Medium Level of control while offering you the protection from surroundings. Sports Mode will kick the Drone into gear, making it more sensitive… and much faster.
Tripod Mode is the final setting, this slows the drone down and makes it less responsive to controls. This doesn’t mean that your drone will Lag etc, it just means that it will be able to video much smoother as it turns slower.
DJI Mavic 2 Pro Review – Toms Trusted Final Thoughts
This Drone is a light weight device, but it packs a great punch. It’s got fantastic spec, although we would have liked 4K at 60FPS.
If you’re a videographer and you need a drone which can be packed away as you visit various sites, this Mavic Pro 2 must be a serious contender for becoming your drone.

Great Drone. The distance this thing is operational at amazes me. I can handle around 2.5 miles with ease, but haven’t had the space to try any further.
It’s also crystal clear at this range. Not the cheapest drone, but you definitely get what you pay for.
The Tracking technology is flawless.
I’ve put high price as the only con but it’s actually pretty good value for what you get.

Oh wow, this is awesome, I can fly hahahahahahaha. So simple to use and idiot proof almost. Yes you could still stack it but you have to be sensible as it costs so much.Really really recommend this drone. its my first ever drone and i am over the moon. You will need 2 extra batteries, you think you wont but you will, just to keep flying whilst other charges.1/2 hour battery life goes quick if your learning.Im still learning controls but have picked up speed now, next to master the camera.

The only reason this doesn’t get 5 stars is because amazon support in replacing the item was non-existent.There is an issue with this drone that does not allow the update work.Dji were great and said sent it to amazon for replacement. Amazon said fine. We’ll let you know in 48 hours regarding the replacement. After waiting and then chasing they said no we can’t replace just return. But having used this drone. When it works it’s awesome.

Fantastic aircraft, superb to fly and excellent image. Sometimes buying a refurb feels like a bit of a gamble, but I’m very happy that I decided to do so this time. Prompt delivery.

The drone is so much more compact than others such as the phantom series, however, it comes packed with tech to make flying it fun, simple and safer.. along with a great camera for shots and really stunning video.. I’m really happy having upgraded from a phantom 3 advance
